영문소설 ‘그레이스 노트’ 펴낸 이상은씨
세계적인 첼리스트가 되기 위해 유학 왔다가 자신의 꿈을 접고 세 딸을 훌륭하게 키워낸 이민 1세대 여성이 자신의 삶을 성실하게 기록한 영문소설을 출판했다.
이상은(Sang-Eun Lee Bukaty)씨의 자전소설 ‘그레이스 노트’(Grace Notes)는 최근 출판 직후 아마존 닷컴에 오르면서 다양한 독자층으로부터 좋은 평가를 얻고 있다. 이 책을 자신의 세 딸과 모든 코리안 아메리칸 어머니들 그리고 그 2세 자녀들에게 헌정한 저자는 “한국의 모든 어머니들이 자녀들에게 들려주고 싶은 이야기”라고 말했다. “수십년 전 미국으로 건너온 1세대 부모들의 이야기를 2세들에게 전하고 싶어서 썼습니다. 누구나 겪었던 이야기지만 그 가운데 나 개인의 특별한 이야기가 담겨 있지요. 읽은 사람들이 다 자기 얘기라고 공감하며 눈물을 흘릴 정도로 많은 사람의 호응을 얻고 있습니다” 이상은씨는 서울예고 학생시절부터 동아콩쿠르, 서울대 콩쿠르, 연대 콩쿠르 등 수많은 대회에서 1등을 휩쓸었으며 1961년 KBS 교향악단과의 협연으로 데뷔하면서 한국 음악계의 기대를 한 몸에 받던 유망주였다. 이대 재학 중 1965년 미국으로 유학 온 그녀는 1969년 USC 음대를 졸업했으나 결혼하고 곧 아이들을 낳게 되면서 음악을 계속하기 힘들어 아까운 재능은 사장되고 말았다. 이 책에는 한국전쟁의 경험, 유학생으로 공부하며 고생하던 이야기, 결혼 후 미국사회에서 살며 아이들 키운 이야기, 그리고 이혼의 상처와 미국인 남편과의 재혼에 이르는 인생 여정 굽이굽이가 수려하고 담백한 문체로 그려져 있다. 설과 김장 등 한국의 문화도 자세히 묘사돼 있어 교육 자료로도 사용할 수 있다고 말한 이씨는 영어로 쓴 이유에 대해 “미국에서 45년을 살아오는 동안 한국어 문장 구사력에 자신을 잃었기 때문이기도 하지만 이민 1세대의 이야기를 영문으로 남긴 책이 없다는 안타까움에 일부러 영어로 책을 썼다”고 설명했다. 이씨는 이 책을 쓰기 위해 UC어바인에서 작문 클래스를 10쿼터 동안 수강하는 등 많은 노력을 기울였다. 그래서인지 프롤로그에서부터 독자를 잡아당겨 계속 책장을 넘기게 하는 스토리 전개가 뛰어나고, 영어 구사력도 어색하지 않으면서 쉽고 깔끔하게 쓰여진 점이 돋보인다. 이상은씨는 8월 중 LA 한국문화원에서 이 책에 대한 세미나를 가질 예정이며, 10월에는 UC어바인에서 북 토크 행사, 내년 1월에는 뉴포트비치 도서관에서 북 사인회와 함께 렉처 시리즈도 계획돼 있다. <정숙희 기자> Filed under: Comments are closed. |
